ASHRAE®
American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers

Welcome to the Vancouver Island Chapter of ASHRAE. Our goal is to provide information about Chapter activities as well as resources for the membership and others interested in the field of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

ASHRAE Vancouver Island supports the local community in many ways, one of which is to provide an annual chapter endowment scholarship to a limited number of local students. This year, one of the lucky recipients expressed his appreciation in a letter to our student chair. The letter is here.

Introduction to Region XI

In 1979 Region II and Region X were split to give birth to Region XI, a geographical monster of 1.89 million square miles, equivalent to 1/2 of the area of the USA. Including all of Canada west of Thunder Bay, Ontario, plus Alaska, Washington, Northern Idaho, and Oregon, Region XI has 3,000 members in 12 chapters. The Region is unique in containing both US and Canadian Chapters.

The scale of Region XI can best be understood by realizing that it includes three time zones, and that the flying distance separating our farthest Chapters is 3,200 miles. These distances are a real deterrent to visitors. The map of the Region looks like part of some strange animal but our Chapter members are all quite human!

ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers is an international organization of 50,000 persons with chapters throughout the world. The Society is organized for the sole purpose of advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration for the public's benefit through research, standards writing, continuing education and publications.

Through its membership, ASHRAE writes standards that set uniform methods of testing and rating equipment and establish accepted practices for the HVAC&R industry worldwide, such as the design of energy efficient buildings. The Society's research program, currently more than 100 research projects worth nearly $8 million, investigates numerous issues, such as identifying new refrigerants that are environmentally safe. ASHRAE organizes broad-based technical programs for presentation at its semiannual meetings and co-sponsors the International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition, the largest HVAC&R trade show in North America.

50/25/25 DRAW-We are continuing with our 50/25/25 draw which went off really
well in our September meeting. We will be continuing this on for the rest of the
season. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. 25% goes to the winner, 25% goes to a
cumulative draw which will be awarded at our last dinner of the season and 50%
goes into the research fund for our chapter.
ASHRAE #145 has added a Student Sponsorship Program. We would be asking
members to sponsor students and cover the cost of the dinner, at the regular
student rate. This program is to give students the opportunity to meet and get
involved with our industry. Members will gain the opportunity to speak with the
students at the dinner and assist them in the development of their careers. The
sponsored spots will need to be paid in advance and will be given out in a first
RSVP’d; first seated order. So please contact us in advance as positions will be
limited. Sponsors will be mentioned in our distributions to be recognized for their
support. If you or your firm would be interested in sponsoring a position for
students please contact me.
Currently we have received student sponsor positions from ADVICAS, HSL
Automation, HWT and HVAC Solutions. We have 5 seats for this month’s
dinner and they will be awarded on a first come, first served basis so Students
please let us know if you are planning to attend.
