Following is a short
excerpt from the history prepared by Jack Meredith in 1994.
1985/86 - President Jack Meredith
The first regular meeting of the Chapter was held on
January l 7, 1985, at the Princess Mary Restaurant Vessel. Jim Park was in
attendance as was Ralph Robson and six other members of the British Columbia
Chapter. On their behalf Ralph presented the Chapter with a cheque for $300 to
assist us with our startup expenses.
The Princess Mary continued to be our meeting place until
October 1985 when we moved to the Imperial Inn on Douglas Street. Except for
the occasional site visits and special meetings the Imperial Inn continued to
be our meeting place.
The meetings were always marked by having very interesting
and timely technical presentations which invariably sparked lively discussion.
The sessions are tabulated in Appendix “1”.
Once the Chapter was up and running in the fall of 1985, we
had a paid up membership of 27 and a number of ''check in the mail'' members on
the sidelines. Meals went for the astonishing amount of $11 each, and we were
making a substantial profit at that. Membership counts almost became a lottery
event with every meeting breathlessly waiting for the update number. By the end
of the calendar 1985 we had 38 paid up members, by the end of the ASHRAE year
the total had reached 60!
We also started up an ''R'' in ASHRAE committee which was
led by Rene Ballard who was very busy holding technical sessions before almost
every meeting. The energy management committee were also very busy and had
several entries into the Society competition. The entry for the Glendale
Hospital submitted jointly by Jim Cuthbert, Mel Hughes and Jack Meredith won
the Chapter competition and took second place in Region X1.
A golf tournament was also arranged that gave a good solid
ending to the year marking our new chapter not only as an excellent vehicle for
technical advancement but also as a means to get to know our colleagues better
on a social basis.
The year's total success was marked by coming in second in
the Society relative to the Presidential Award of Excellence. We were only
nosed out by the Dayton Chapter (less than 100 points difference at 4363). We
also won the Richard P. Perry award for the outstanding Chapter at the CRC.
